Air Jordan XII Retro Rerelease Black/Red, White/Red Preview
TheShoeGame dropped details this weekend, of a rumoured re-release of the Air Jordan XII in White/Red and Black/Red. The Black colorway is affectionately called the “Flu Game” Jordans, because he wore them during Game 5 of the NBA Finals versus the Utah Jazz on June 11, 1997. His Airness scored 38 points to lead all scorers (twice as many as Karl Malone, the closest with 19), with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and three steals- at age 34, in the 100th game of the NBA season, when three hours before tip-off he’d been bed ridden with “flu-like symptoms” for a day and a half. The story of the Flu Game is one of the cornerstone’s of Jordan’s legendary will to win, and in his own words “probably the most difficult thing I’ve ever done”
Rumoured to drop with the White/Reds pictured below in November of 2009 with a pricetag of $150.00, they are reported to feature a suede upper. And the wait begins…

Rei Kawakubo’s retail space already has some of the top premium brands in the world on their shelves: Visvim, NOWHERE, and of course, COMME des GARCONS, the owner’s line- but bringing Supreme’s superhero street cred to London is quite a coup for the company. According to HighSnobiety.com, the shop-in-shop will open in March with Supreme’s Spring/Summer 2009 collection. Big news for all Brits looking to step their game up.
Kid Cudi tasered at All-Star Weekend
G.O.O.D. Music recording artist Kid Cudi was tasered and arrested at a party for the NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix Saturday night. Kid Cudi was scheduled to preform at party thrown by Reebok, but got into an altercation with a Reebok employee when they told Cudi he couldn’t wear Jordan brand sneakers onstage. I gotta say, I have no idea how this happens. If I’m the Reebok employee- is this really that big an issue? Bring out the tasers on the dude with our competitor’s shoes? I’m wondering if there’s more to this, or if somebody was just being an @$$hole. Cudi has responded on his blog by basically saying it was a misunderstanding and poorly handled all around. “The pain is deep…”

Of course I’m waking up with a big smile this morning, and the sky will undoubtedly be a beautiful Carolina blue as roughly one-third of the college basketball fans here in central North Carolina (in my humble opinion, the basketball center of the world) are going to have a little more pep in their steps today. UNC beat their hated rival / next-door neighbor Duke university in the first of their two annual regular-season games last night, 101-87. Danny Green (pictured above, photo by Kevin Cox/Getty Images) scored fifteen points and grabbed five rebounds, as all five North Carolina starters hit double figures. UNC has won the last four games played at Duke. Heels baby!

In the matter of 50 Cent vs. Rick Ross
Although, it might be more accurate to say “50 Cent versus the world”. 50 has had a string of bad luck recently, but all of that changed when Rick Ross recorded a track called “Mafia Music” for his upcoming album “Deeper Than Rap”, which was later leaked to the Internet. In it Ross takes several blatant jabs at 50 Cent (aka Curtis Jackson), which, unsurprisingly, has resulted in beef. This makes tremendous business sense for both parties. Nobody is selling CDs these days- let alone rappers (minus Lil’ Wayne of course), so both Ross and 50 need anticipation and media coverage to create the elusive “buzz” that is in such high demand and low supply in today’s record industry. But is this not all theatre? Isn’t the Hiphop community always struggling within and strangling without the concept of real vs. fake? Many rappers, groups, and labels portray themselves as “the real”, while denouncing “the fake”. Constant lookout is made for those who are fronting- making themselves out to be something they aren’t. And every once in a while, if rap gets too poppy, or experimental, or regionalized, or really anything too different there is a sort of “revival of the real” when someone swoops in, usually proclaiming being “tired” of this “fake shit”, and ready to “bring it back”. NWA and Ice-T were keeping it “real” for the West Coast, The Wu Tang Clan kept it “real” in response to the R&B fusion of the early ’90s. 50 Cent himself (with Dr. Dre producing) brought a return to the “Real”, as did Rick Ross on a smaller scale more recently. Of course, to keep it real, you have to give, you know, a semblance of realness. Both Rick Ross and 50 Cent take their names from famous street criminals, and both claim to still have the gang and drug connections to f___ up anyone they please. So we get treated to delightful little pieces of tripe like this, a charming “poem” read by 50 Cent towards DJ Khaled, a producer and associate of Ross’. In the poem, 50 passively-aggressively threatens Khaled’s Mother, videotaping her at work, and the front of her house, while the mobile-phone cameramen (courageous!) flash t-shirts from 50’s website. I didn’t want the video embedded here on slippers, because it’s just ugly and nasty, but I decided to give the link, so people could see how ridiculous this shit really is. Really 50? Really?
Oh, and this is the same 50 Cent that is suing an internet advertising company because they made a pay-per-click Flash web Ad imploring surfers to “Shoot The Rapper”, who was a cartoonish parody of 50 Cent. Aghast at the thought of unlicensed image usage, they pretended to be aghast at the “vile, tasteless and despicable” ad that “quite literally calls for violence against him”. 50 doesn’t mind threatening people, as long as he gets his cut, right?
Beyond trash. Ross isn’t winning, or even particularly exciting either, but this is just disgusting garbage. 50 likes beefing with Ross, but you get the feeling he’d really rather go at Wayne. Wayne has Rock songs charting in the top-20 this week. I can’t tell you the last thing 50’s released since “I Get Money”. You decide.

So, you probably don’t need any update here- America’s two biggest young pop stars, who are dating, get into a fistfight outside of a Grammy party that ends up in a trip to the emergency room. Speaking of real vs. fake. This is VERY real. This isn’t posturing, or marketing, or building an image- this is disturbingly genuine and all too human. Now, while circumstances are still murky at best, it seems to be fairly well accepted that Brown hit Rihanna, with a closed fist outside of his car. What’s also wild is the PR action taking place behind the scenes as camps for both stars try to leak the right info, and spin the story to the benefit of their client. Plus we’ve been blessed with all sorts of ‘Net rumours, most of them laughably ugly. The latest twist- Jay-Z has allegedly said “Chris is a walking dead man”, and because irony is approximately 70% of the known universe, a demo song from Mario called “Emergency Room” has surfaced with a Rihanna-esque singer on the track so Mario could pitch it to her label, although it had been recorded long in advance. I wonder if Mario has been looking around all week like “uh…too soon?”

Less yappin’ and more rappin’! Jadakiss definitely seems poised to continue to “help the game” (it ain’t help him) with The Last Kissset to be released on March 10th. Jada continues to whet the apetites of the Hiphop community with this mixtape release with Green Lantern. It’s been my soundtrack tonight as I’ve been watching UNC and Duke. Definitely fire. Get that!
